It allows for, among other things, more precise positional tracking for devices that are near each other, which could enhance things like AirDrop and Apple's rumored tracking devices for lost possessions. The fact that new iPhones were still displaying the telltale location services arrow near the battery bar even when no apps had permission was thought of as a bug, until security reporter Brian Krebs looked into it in December.

According to Apple, it was actually working as intended; the Ultra Wideband chip is subject to different regulations in different places, so the phones were tracking their locations to make sure the chips could be used at all. Or, if I want to put in a little extra work with a WiFi Pineapple I can just get near you and your phone is regularly broadcasting out all of the SSIDs you frequently connect to looking for those networks. As long as your SSID is unique it is a huge privacy concern. WiFi is just a auditory-based unplugged ethernet cable floating in front of all devices that support it. If it were, consumers would demand that there be more choice i. They make more money if they take advantage of their market dominance to gather, use and sell your data. However, the report finds that even if they are off, Apple can periodically seek your location data. Krebs contacted Apple about the issue and was told that 'this is by design' and it is 'expected behavior' of the technology.
